L V Ruiz, a splendid Queens-based woodworker, and I recently collaborated on this set of tombs. It was a delight to work with another artist whose oeuvre is both similar to and different from mine; she works in an idiom that is quite spiritual and embedded with meaning. Her woodwork, which truly must be seen (or, better yet, held) to be fully appreciated, is really beautiful, and the care and handiwork that goes into each piece of work... well, there is a certain presence of the pieces, a whole that is larger than the sum of parts (and hours of work) that makes the objects very comforting in a strange way.
Anyway, I was delighted when she asked me to lend some paintings to an idea she had. Thus, the interchangeable tiny tomb set. They're meant to be hand-held objects, and can be displayed in various configurations. Each has its own identity as part of the whole-- the flanking tombs are the Tumbas De Mal De Ojo - Los Muertos, and the central piece is the Cuervo Empalado. My paintings are gouache and mixed media on illustration board, sealed with a clear resin.
They're available; please contact me if you're interested. Any specific woodworking questions can be directed to L V Ruiz.
