The original idea for this piece came from a vague retelling of Orpheus, specifically the point at which he and Eurydice are leaving Hell.  I don't make any claims to the exactness of that connection now, of course, as the painting far outgrew its origins into something more generally about loss/loneliness and  the consequence of the release of nasties from the bowels of the earth (and the ambiguous little folks that choose to live in its proximity).

This beast is what has kept me inside-- and relatively silent on the interweb-- for the past month or so.  It was really wonderful to spend time inside this little space.  About an hour after finishing it, I ran into a 2" long patent leather beetle outside-- so similar to the fellow in the immediate lower left it stopped me dead in my tracks-- talk about unsettling.  It was a tiny moment of unreality when I worried I had actually unleashed these things into the tangible world.

It was exactly like this fellow, grabbed from Wikipedia. If you ever run into one of these guys, stop and hang out for a bit-- they're weirdly emotive.  And if you touch their backs, they'll make squeaky fussy noises at you.

He neglected his dinners for days, but his tiny experiment is ready for testing-- much to the chagrin of the house servants.  I reckon they'd all leave if it weren't for the kindness of his sister.

3 x 5 graphite & gouache on illustration board.

I've been drawing a bit more lately-- rather, I've been enjoying actually rendering my drawings, rather than the exuberant but half-finished diddles in my sketchbook.  Poor fellow-- composed of illustration board remnants and old palette crumbs, it's no wonder he needs to dress so nattily.

I imagine he calls his ward "swee Tea," rather than my slurry Southern "sweadea" pronunciation.  Let's hope he keeps those petit fours coming, or else Sweetie looks capable of keeping the whole house up at night, greedy beggar.

I can't tell you what these fellows are up to-- they said absolutely nothing as they passed me in the hallway (although I admit I was peeking from behind the drapes)-- but it is no good.

What power art thou,
Who from below,
Hast made me rise,
Unwillingly and slow,
From beds of everlasting snow?

Salutations, all!

Things have been quiet on my end because I've been in the studio conjuring up new things (more on that soon) but I wanted to let everyone (and especially those folks in the Los Angeles area) know about my show opening tonight at Thinkspace.

I'm delighted about the works in this show.  My everyday world was in a lot of flux this summer but I was able to really dig deep into the new realms that were unfolding as I was exploring Waterways.  I feel like I am inching closer to being able to realize (both mentally and tangibly) and flesh out the world of these creatures.  I suppose what I really mean to say here is, the pieces in this show are the result of a lot of exploration and fortuitous rabbit-hole-falling, and I'm excited to be able to share them with you.

The pieces are online for preview here.

Thanks so much to Meighan over at the excellent My Love For You Is A Stampede of Horses for her write-up on the show.

P.S. As alluded to above, I'll be back soon with new works to share; just need a little more time in the laboratory.

"Hello, there, friend..."

This piece came completely out of left field-- I did the lineart in a bar on a whim (since it's so close to my upcoming August show, I always have some primed illustration board in my bag to work on-- it's a sickness, I tell you!) and the setting developed as I was painting.  I'm so surprised by it-- I wasn't planning on it being this dark, but I really love this place I discovered, so safe and dreamlike... I had to restrain myself from painting prehistoric insects slicing the air...

I don't know if it's readily apparent, but our little adventurous friend has a Darwin fish on the back of his boat.
