Oh! Thanks to the Not-God, whose beneficence did
Not give us this meal we eat:
He has Not bade us eat, for our multiplication
Is really No interest of His.
From Jubilate! And other hymns to Not-God, Vol I.
A note on the work: it's surprising how the in-outs of creating everyday can make you lose self-evident guidelines... what I mean to say, really, is that I've gotten into a bad habit of not spending enough time with my ideas in my sketchbooks before going straight to painting them (I just get too excited), and I think my work has suffered somewhat because of that. I'm working very hard on my sketchbooks right now, and this is the first product of that-- all these fellows have been showing up a lot lately. This piece was furthermore a bit of an experiment in that I moved away from reliance upon graphite outlining-- it was surprising, actually, how much more I read the way the forms interacted without knowing that I would be grinding in an outline after painting it. Anyway, I'm thankful for this piece because I've been a little rut-stuck and this feels like my first shovelful out.
