one more thing

Drunkards_2I was thrilled to be able to get my hands on an edition of this etching by local artist Russell Richards to give as a special Christmas present.  Check his stuff out, I think he's just fantastic-- he's got a great sense of humor and very clever use of line with a childlike feel to it.

jive katze

Hey, folks.  Hope that everyone had a fantastic holiday (if you celebrate) and that everyone is gearing up for a fun New Year's.  I and my S.O. are the proud new owners of a Honda Fit-- huzzah! jive katze jive katze detail 2 jive katze detail 1

Jive Katze, 8 x 10 gouache on illustration board.
Meant to be a (very) loose interpretation of what a jive katze would look like-- obviously he's a bit more catfish than cat.  I like the thought of a (drunken?) lilting promenade around in a beastie like him... lemme on!

I'll be updating with more new paintings soon, I have a couple of things on my desk at the moment that are about to be finished. (currently a bit slowed down by work & a nasty sinus infection.)

At any rate, I hope everyone will have a stellar NYE.  Here's to 2008!

The lonely butcher and his love missives.
I was paging through one of my anatomy books and fell in love with the shape/color of the spleen.... somehow that turned into this faux-anatomical apartment complex.  When I get a chance I think I'm going to make a mess of apartments in this fashion.  (less veins, though, they are a pain and get confusing when you're trying to paint the pencil sketch-- which part goes where?)

So of course everything is crazy this time of year-- holidays, getting packages off in time (which means paying more than I ought to, grr UPS), and in my case having the joy (sic) of my car breaking down and for all intents & purposes going to that great salvage yard in the sky.  (ok, really, it's going to the great salvage yard in Ruckersville, but whatever).   Sigh... hope everyone is navigating this odd time of year well enough.  Good luck!  I may be absent from the blog/flickr world for a little bit but I'll come back with lots of good things to share.

A longer than expected journey

a longer than expected journey

4 x 2.5 oval.

I love the thought of a journey-to-the-center-of-my-gut storyline, except with non-sf-y ships...  I suppose that an open-air yacht would be problematic...  that would require a lot of deck swabbing...

Taking the girls for a morning walk.

The fat bird is somewhat (memory-) based on my mother's ornery old parrot.  He's so fat he can't even fly anymore, silly thing.

the long-retired mariner

This fellow is 3 x 4" on illustration board.  (you can kinda see on this scan shows how much schmutz I ought to clean off my scanner...)   ...continuing with a winter palette, apparently...

I'm trying to go outside my comfort zone with gouache lately-- not relying so much on pencil lines, trying to bring more light and depth into the paint since it's truly such a beautiful medium. I have so much to learn.

preflight

preflight, originally uploaded by Allison Sommers.

6.5 x 8.5 gouache on illustration board.  It's a piece for "Fight for Flight," an art benefit for API at Thinkspace in early January.

While I was working on this piece, it occurred to me that it probably owes a debt to the wonderful James Gurney and the skybaxes in Dinotopia.  (he also has an excellent and very informative blog here)
